Ever since I got back from my stay in Seattle, I've been on a huge Illustrator kick. These are characters from the 100 Demon book I did a while ago. They are Yokai, or Japanese ghosts, demons and monsters.
This is a new piece I did for my friend Andy Tanner's new CD Suitcase Full of Air. He gave four artists the same direction and then we all did a piece. I had been really wanting to do a sculpture/drawing thing and photo it. I was really happy with how it turned out and have plans to do another.
Something new for me. They are supposed to be like memory viewers. I think this is a leap off idea from the dolls. The idea is to have a mask on the wall and when you look into its eyes or mouth there is a little light and an image there. These are the first three I made on the idea but I plan to do more soon.
These are all hand made dolls I've been making for almost two years now. I usually get together a big mess of stuff and then sit down and start gluing and sewing things together. As they've gone on I've become more and more interested in the ritualistic aspects of them and have been hiding thing(letters, clay organs, mirrors) in little compartments within them and having windows or viewers outside so that people can see inside them. I do sew all of the clothes and quite often sculpt pieces for them too but the heads primarily come from a thrift shop or dollar store.
